UC Banilad celebrated its 7th year with a bang via a wildly entertaining stage production mounted on July 27, 28 and 29, 2007.

Entitled “Café Siete,” the three-night presentation had stand-up comedy, ramp modeling, songs and dances. It paraded a huge cast of a surprisingly extraordinary campus talents.

The plot revolved on the underpinning for the anniversary of a fictitious restaurant-cum-entertainment joint named Café Siete which coincided with the birthday celebration of Mamita, played with the right dosage of bitchy flair by Nursing Clinical Instructor Sandro Guillo. Helping him out was his dreamy floor manager (Nursing student Flor Dindo Rosas), while Madame Charing (Education major Jose Pineda), a close friend of the entrepreneur, lent his gift of voodoo.

It started off with the screening for the café’s new applicants. Mug shots of some of the university personnel as applicants were flashed on the three colossal LCD screens, earning cheers from the crowd. Some student dramatis personae who portrayed incorrigible applicants, flaunted their thespian best, one at a time on stage. A roll of campus models took the ramp to display the sexy casuals’ collection of beautician-designer Danny Booc. A young set of Nursing Clinical Instructors composed of Francis Rufo, Kara Pino, Michelle Beltran, Helen Mae Pugoy, Rosalane Saberon and Michael Borden had their turn on the ramp.

Three student performers stood out among the cast of hundreds. Ronie Bughao tickled the funny bones of the audience with his Roderick Paulate-type of characterization. He easily switched from a thuggish mien to an effeminate stand-up comedian wanna-be. He played a College of Education undergraduate whose memorable line was “Be proud to be a teacher, your husband depends on you!”

Another standout was Cliffy Daing, a.k.a. Shakira. He made a grand entrance by braving four storeys of the UC Banilad edifice, with only a cable fastened on. He then shook his hips Shakira style, in no less than the rhythm of “Hips Don’t Lie”.

Not a moment passed without laughter when Madame Charing reminisced of his lost love with the ballad “Someday”.

Student Affairs Director Mars Mandal made a cameo appearance as a director who, together with a group of student actors, auditioned before Mamita’s discriminating taste. The singing nurse, Ms. Ana Trazona rendered several songs. Mamita then sang solo for the finale.

Stage director-extraordinaire Mr. Rudy U. Aviles created a fast-paced extravaganza from a script written by Mr. Ramir Salonoy. Choreography was by Maruel Malazarte and musical direction by Ismael Dago-oc. Set construction was handled by Engr. JC Flores. Sotero Abrito and Carlson Bangcat were the able Stage Managers. Production Managers were Mr. Mars Mandal and Ms. Ana Trazona.

Though the UC Banilad’s Quadrangle was repeatedly threatened with rain all throughout the three-night shows, the production still managed to be a blast, as the cast clearly delivered what they came for and gave the audience more than their money’s worth.
