PWRDS And UC Renews Term • University of Cebu

The Philippine Welding Research and Development Society (PWRDS) renewed its tie-up agreement with the university for another term.

The MOA signing was participated in by Atty. Augusto W. Go, UC President, Atty. Nendell Hanz Abella, VC-Administrative Affairs, Dean Bartolome Puzon and PWRDS Vice- President Mr. Jesselito R. Godofredo, and Ms. Therese C. Saberon, PWRDS Administrative Officer on August 9, 2007.

The agreement unites the university and PWRDS in continuing to provide Welding Refresher Courses to Cebuanos through the one-storey structure in UC-METC which houses an air-conditioned lecture room, office and welding facilities for enrollees. PWRDS is affiliated with TESDA.

The joint venture provides refresher courses, even for those without a background in welding. The basic category, the Industrial Welding and Pipe Fitting, is for a beginner who wishes to earn a vocational certificate on the craft. The course can be availed for only P7,500, which already includes materials and plant tour.

If an enrollee completes the basic course and wishes to move on to the next category, he/she will undergo evaluation. If a candidate already has a license, he/she will be automatically recommended to level two, the Gas Tungsten/ Shielded Metal Art Welding or TIG.

As in the previous year, three classes will run simultaneously to coach interested individuals.

“While there are students doing practical exercises, there is another class attending a lecture,” explains Ms. Gemma Cabal of PWRDS.

Regular morning and afternoon classes run for 19 days, while evening sessions run for almost two months, scheduled for three hours from Mondays to Fridays and whole day Sundays. Classes are limited to small groups to optimize learning. In fact, each batch is composed of only 24 persons.

Understandably, considering the courses’ increasing popularity, getting a reservation could mean being waitlisted.

The MOA extends the partnership of the parties to another year of offering Welding Courses.
