The Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA) – Cebu Federation recently convened for the annual Accountancy Quiz Bowls and Muse and Escort Competition. UC was well represented, with student delegates from three of the four campuses who prepared thoroughly for the events.

Hazel Grace Apa and Jeramael Villaber, Accountancy juniors of UC Main, outshined the delegates of the other schools when they won first place in the Level One Accountancy Quiz on July 18, 2007 held at the Ayala Entertainment Center. Coaching them was Mr. Albert Keith Dominguito. They also expressed gratitude to their other Accountancy teachers whom they approached for occasional pointers.

Rocelo Becera and Erik Legaspi, third year BSA students, did UC Banilad proud as they claimed the third place for the same category. They were primed by their Coaches, Mr. Marvin Naraja and Mr. Christopher Biore. Mr. Biore is the Chair of UC Banilad’s College of Commerce and Accountancy.

UC-LM claimed the second place in the Level Two Category of the Accountancy Quiz Bowl, held on the same date and venue as the Level One. The winning team was composed of Rachel Pepito (BSA-4), Mary Ann Catigbe (BSA-4), Jazzie Juntong (BSA-4) and the reviewees Exequiel C. Cruspero, Jr. and Brigette Manayon. They were coached by Ms. Jean Bonganciso, their JPIA Adviser, and their Dean, Mrs. Jessica Selisana.

The Muse and Escort Competitions weren’t spared by the dominance of UC Accountancy undergraduates held at USP Lahug last July 15, 2007. Joey Carla Aponesto (BSA-I) emerged first and Rengie Galo (BSA-3) placed third. Both come from the Main Campus. “I did my own make-up and wore the simplest clothes!” confided Aponesta, who won beauty titles previously.

Camaraderie while preparing for their respective challenges was evident, as most of the team-mates were classmates in some, if not all, classes.

The preparation proved rigorous as well.

“The contest covered topics from our previous subjects, which meant we had to review these topics while attending our current classes. It was taxing. We had to have a number of over-night group studies. That routine went for a few weeks,” admitted Becera and Legaspi of UC Banilad. They joined the Level One Category which included Basic Accounting, Partnership Accounting, Corporation Accounting, and Financial Accounting. But in the end, the efforts paid off.
