The university’s researchers showcased their prime case studies at the recent Research Forum.
Held at the AB-Audio Visual Room (AVR), the affair was organized by Dr. Alma V. Jaguros and attended both by teacher-researchers and students. Four researchers presented their cases to the audience. Araceli Beltran shared the “Vocabulary Profile of AB Students (freshmen),” Kathleen Abasolo disclosed the “Level of Communication Skills of UC Applicants: Implication to Employability in selected Cebu-based Contact Centers,” Engr. Gilbert Legaspi talked of his study “Perception of Students on Faculty Efficiency of the Marine Engineering Department,” while Eduardo Espiritu tackled “An On-line Grading System for the College of Information and Computer Science of the University of Cebu, Cebu City.”
Some of the topics, as Beltran’s and Abasolo’s, were already published in the research manual released on the opening of the second semester, SY 2006-2007.
The event was also graced with the presence of Engr. Raymund Absin, Dr. Ulyses Aparece and Dr. Edgar Alosbaños as the panel of reactors who probed the researchers and cleared the grey area of their researches.
Abasolo’s study had students gushing over the realities and the how-to’s in gaining employment in the prevalent employment destination, the call center. Though the figure of employability of UC graduates in the call center setting Abasolo came up in her study was staggering, Dr. Erlinda P. Barcelo was quick to share the southern edge many Tagalogs lack and find viable—the Cebuano twang. Espiritu’s study also gained sympathy from the audience, as many thought his idea novel and effective in cutting back time and effort on the part of the teacher.
Towards the end, a suggestion was raised to hold the forum prior to the printing or publishing of the research in the research journal booklet.
The event proved fruitful as the researchers not only shared their studies to further the development of the institution, they too imparted useful information and gave the students diligent examples to ape.
