Mechanical engineering students representing the university rose above other schools’ representatives from all over the country when they claimed the champion’s trophy, gold medal and cash prize during the National Junior Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (JPSME) Quizbowl on October 24 to 27, 2007 at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC).

The victory was a team effort of Iron Plando (as the Team Captain), Cesar Legaspino (who specialized in mathematics and power plant), Ray Julius Lazara (who took charge of the areas of mathematics and engineering sciences), Jacinto Fajardo Jr. (who concentrated for power plant engineering), Joseph Mayormita (who focused on engineering sciences) and Angelo Rondrique (who acted as the assistant Coach). The faculty assisting the team were Engrs. Rondel Naval, Ronnie Alcorcon and Cecilio Estoconing.

“At first it was difficult for us to get together because of the differences of our schedules,” shared Fajardo. The group practiced at the Multi-purpose hall at the Engineering faculty room and at the machine shop. They admitted they reviewed individually apart from their regular group tune-ups.

There were three topics for the elimination round, then for the final round ten random questions were raised.

The winning group paid a courtesy call to UC President Atty. Augusto W. Go. They were congratulated and inspired them to push further, especially for their upcoming PRC licensure exams, saying “Passing the board is not a problem for you any more.”

Of course, the car prize incentive was reiterated for the young gentlemen to aspire for the top place.
