The Norwegian Training Center - Manila of the Norwegian Maritime Foundation of the Philippines, Inc. has donated funds to aid the Maritime Education and Training Center in the acquisition of the Automatic Identification System (AIS).

A check worth Php175,000 was handed by Norwegian Shipowners Association (NSA) Project Manager Capt. Morten Johnsen to UC President Atty. Augusto W. Go. The awarding was held at the NSA office in the UC Lapulapu - Mandaue Campus (UCLM) on January 11, 2008.

The donor is a representative of the Association Training Education Project (ATEP) Board of Trustees, and is likewise closely affiliated with NSA. It is one of the university’s biggest benefactors by way of scholarship grants, having recently inked an understanding with UC to sponsor an additional 300 Marine Engineering and Marine Transportation freshmen to be enrolled in UCLM. The 300 scholars will commence their studies in June, 2008. NSA has previously given the university various equipment since their partnership with UC began in the 90’s.

UC is one of the six maritime schools in the country which have been handpicked by NSA for their scholarship programs. Interestingly, they also give priority to female scholars.

The UC-NSA graduates have subsequently landed employment with the NSA member-companies, where they earn dollars while traveling the world. NSA also maintains a program which checks on its graduates and encourages them to review for rank promotions on board.
