Another pair of UC athletes did the country proud in the field of athletics.
Julius Felicisimo Nierras Jr. dominated the 400 meter run by clocking 46.56 seconds, earning him a gold finish during the 24th Southeast Asia Games held in Bangkok, Thailand.
Nierras Jr, a 2002 UC Track and Field Varsity Star athlete went neck-to-neck with Thailand’s Jukkatip Pojaroen (46.64 seconds). Malaysia’s Muhamad Zaiful Zainal Abiding came in third.
Another UC graduate, Renante Briones, earned a silver medal in the Men's 94 kg category Weightlifting. He is now playing for the Philippine Army.
The Filipino contingent has collected 33 golds, 51 silvers, and 76 bronze medals in the 24th Southeast Asia Games as of December 12, 2007.
The university, as well as the local government, intends to give incentives to the two UC alumni. Councilor Sylvan Jakosalem of the Cebu City Council’s Committee on Professional Sports, recognition will give Nierras and Briones on charter day when they will join Gerry Peñalosa, AJ Banal and the Cebu Football team which won in the Philippine Olympic Festival as guests of honor.
