UC Banilad grabbed two choice prizes during the Pasigarbo sa Sugbo held in SM Trade Hall on November 23 to 25, 2007.

A group of 17 students under the tutelage of Commerce Chair Mr. Christopher Biore scored Best in Product Design, with their “Bakasi (Cebuano for Sea Eel) in corn oil” beating 21 groups of the other school’s entries.

The group was composed of Gholyne Darl Abatayo, Necydel Princess Astrologo, Manilyn Becaldo, Kristine Cabrera, Saul Carlo Gelasque, Paul Mitchelle Labra, Liza Lopez, Ryan Maningo, James Monzolin, Junray Nimero, Kristan Olis, Marecris Ruiz, Raphaela Seguis, Arthur Tabaranza, Devie Tejada, Jocelyn Ubas and Glydman Gatle Zanoria. They were third and fourth year students enrolled in Feasibility Study 1 for the first semester. During the contest, they were taking the Feasibility Study 2 class.

The group sought the assistance of the College of HRM to gain access to one of the department’s kitchen. After several attempts, they sent a sample to the laboratory of the Department of Trade and Industry (DOST) to check if the product was commercially viable and to assess the length of its shelf life.

Mr. Biore’s expert guidance proved fruitful, as the group’s endeavors paid off. “So much was at stake,” said Kristan Olis, who clearly was overjoyed by the verdict. After the event, the group has dialogued with Mayor Sitoy so the people of Cordova could also adopt the product for selling.

Another UC Banilad group of 15 students earned Best in Business Plan for their UC Namay. Their business proposal for the production and marketing of abaca-woven fiber was clearly a cut above the rest.

The group was composed of Jeslyn Gabunada, Riza Masangkay, Belen Ganun, Jennilyn Desaville, Jean Millor, Mirriam Cambal, Raquel Tangog, Segundo Adequiña IV, Ryan Duarte, Agerico Alfred Neri Jr., Glenn Versaga, Randell Encarnacion, Marck Coligado, Jacklyn Abilar and Jonalyn Jadio. They took their cue from faculty members Ms. Necitas Monsanto, CPA, and Ms. Judy Ann Ferrater, MBA.

“It was tough, having to gather the students with their varied schedules,” chorused Ms. Monsanto and Ms. Ferrater. Another difficulty was the funding, since most of the group members are scholars who had difficulty with contributing money.

Other notable entries from UC included the following: Mr. Joseph Emerson Subong, an Accountancy teacher, and the Junior Financial Executives (JFINEX) officers’ “pickled” endeavor; and Mr. Albert Domingito, a Commerce teacher, together with the officers of the Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA) with their Pintos, respectively.
