UC-METC started the pilot class of the welding school in partnership with Unitor on January 22, 2008. The first batch included Filipinos and some Unitor bigwigs assigned in Asia. They took advantage of the advance welding program personally handled by Mr. Leif Andersen, a Norwegian who is with Unitor Asia. The first batch underwent two weeks of training and familiarization with the technicalities of welding and its various updates.
“To improve on building onboard ships, we have made an agreement with schools around the world to install welding schools at their locations, and deliver equipment and the training of the instructors,” enlightened Mr. Andersen. “We train the instructors to a certain standard, because this type of welding school requires a special type of training,” added Mr. Andersen.
UC is one of the five welding schools of Unitor in the Philippines, with the other four located in Manila.
The first batch yielded instructors who will train the succeeding enrollees of the welding school. They are Fernando Alegada, Joever Samonte, Jerome Mendoza, Alex Amatosa, Sixto Pepito, Jr., Maricar Baguio, Neil Tamayo, Abner Roland Arengo, Romeo Carbellido, and Placido Calzada. The Welding School Coordinator is Engr. Celso M. Hayag.
