A Japanese shipping firm recently hoarded 41 UC cadets as fresh additions to their international-faring fleet.
The manning agency Pobar Marine Services, Inc. (PMSI) gathered for their ocean-going client six Marine Engineering freshmen in UC Lapulapu-Mandaue Campus (LM), 10 first year Marine Transportation and four Marine Engineering cadets from the UC-Maritime Education and Training Center (METC). In addition, 21 third year students-- still from METC-- composed of 11 engine cadets and 10 deck cadets will leave Cebu sometime on April and May, 2007, and will soon be receiving dollars, traveling the world while enriching their craft through their apprenticeship aboard the vessels of Iiino Marine Services Co., Ltd. (IMS).
Each of them will be financially assisted in their travel from Manila to the port of embarkation and will be receiving a monthly allowance of not less than 350$ while aboard. Subsequently, the shipboard training is their bridge for future employment with the firm.
Apart from cadetship, two incoming second year students from METC— Alfredo Quijano (BSMT) and Ronie Refuela (BSMARE) -- will be enjoying full tuition, board and lodging sponsorship while receiving allowances.
During a visit last October 2006 in UC, the shipping principal and manning agency through Capt. Leonito M. Mirande, Crewing Manager/ Director/QMR of PMSI have disclosed a growing need for staff aboard their vessels. For this, they tap only two learning institutions as sources for new additions to their company. Clearly this time, they are counting on present UC students to help man their ships in the immediate future.
