Dear Law Students,
Welcome to the University of Cebu College of Law!
First of all, allow me to express my admiration for all of you. Pursuing further studies like Law means setting aside, for the time being, other endeavors which may bring you greater honor and wealth. It also means willingly submitting yourself to the rigors of learning and research when, after a hard day's work - I assume that most of you are working - you would relax and rest. You are, therefore, in a certain sense, pursuing the "magis", the more.
Second, permit me to express my hope for all of you: that beyond your desire to become a lawyer, may you also desire to do more good for your neighbor, your community and your country. The next four or five years, I am certain, will be spent poring over books and documents. I pray, however, that you will not forget the "flesh and bone" Filipino who will eventually need your services as a lawyer so that the quality of his life may be made better.
Third, let me express my challenge to you: make UC become proud of you. You are the College of Law's very first students. It's future, therefore, depends a lot on you; its history lies in your hands. This early, then, devote yourselves to learning and research so that, when the appropriate time comes, you will, indeed, become full-fledged lawyers, to the honor of your school, to the joy of your families.
