Deregulated

The University of Cebu is now a Deregulated University. In a letter addressed to Atty. Augusto W. Go, President of the University of Cebu, dated November 03, 2003, Dr. Manuel D. Punzal, CHED Commissioner and Chair in the Committee on Deregulated and Autonomous Status (CODAS), informed Atty. Go that "by virtue of the Commission en Banc Resolution No. 393-2003 dated October 27, 2003 up to October 26, 2008." Out of 40 Higher Educational Institutions (HEI's) granted Deregulated Status by CHED for their long tradition of integrity and untarnished reputation, UC, together with St. Theresa's College, were the only HEI's from Region VII.

Ms. Candice Gotianuy, Chancellor, Dr. Erlinda P. Barcelo, Vice President for Administration, and Dr. Alicia J. Tan, Vice President for Academic Affairs, attended the awarding of the Award Certificate for UC's Deregulated Status in Malacañang Palace on November 28, 2003. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo personally handed over UC's Certificate to Ms. Gotianuy on this said occasion.

Among the benefits to be enjoyed by UC for this Deregulated Status are the following:

  • Exemption from the issuance of Special Order (SO)
  • Free from monitoring and evaluation activities of the CHED. However, identified PHEIs shall submit requested data as part of the data gathering activity of CHED for its Management Information System
  • Entitlement to grant of subsidies and other financial incentives/assistance from the CHED, whenever funds are available
  • Privilege to determine and prescribe their curricular programs to achieve a global competence
  • Authority to grant Honoris Causa to those deserving, per pertinent provisions of existing CHED issuance on conferment of honorary degrees.
